Hip Pain From Cycling? Start With Saddle Height and Crank Length
Split cycling hip pain into two types first: anterior hip pinching / groin ache is usually a crushed top-dead-center hip angle — saddle too low or too far forward, cranks too long, or a forward-leaning torso plus tight hip flexors tilting the pelvis; lateral hip / one-sided glute ache is usually a saddle too high causing pelvic rocking. The fixes are opposite: the first needs the top-dead-center hip angle "opened" (raise + slightly forward saddle, raise bars, shorter cranks); the second needs the too-high saddle "lowered." Measure with BDC knee angle and TDC hip angle — don't guess. Clinically, a professional fit often lets riders with hip issues ride comfortably again.
Anterior hip / groin pain: too much hip flexion at the top
At top dead center (foot highest) hip flexion is greatest. If that angle is too small (hip too flexed), the femoral neck repeatedly abuts the front rim of the acetabulum, producing pinching, ache, even clicking. Common bike triggers:
- Saddle too low or too far forward: directly increases TDC hip flexion. Raise the saddle, and slightly forward if needed, to open the hip angle;
- Cranks too long: the foot is lifted higher, the hip more flexed. Shorter cranks reduce hip flexion (see crank length);
- Large drop + tight hip flexors: a forward-leaning torso tilts the pelvis forward, further crowding the front of the hip. Raise the bars, and stretch the hip flexors and release the iliopsoas after rides.
Lateral hip / one-sided glute ache: rocking from a too-high saddle
When the saddle is too high, the pelvis dips side to side to reach bottom dead center; ~90 rocks per minute load the lateral hip, glutes and low back on one side, often with chafing. Check: film a side view and measure the BDC knee angle (endurance 140–150°, performance 135–145°); watch from behind for visible pelvic rocking. Lower the too-high saddle (3mm at a time) and recalibrate by knee angle, and one-sided ache often eases. If marked asymmetry remains, rule out a leg-length difference / pelvic misalignment — an in-person assessment.
Adjustment order
Measure first, then adjust, one variable at a time. Film a side view to get BDC knee angle and TDC hip angle → decide "crushed hip angle" vs "too-high saddle rocking" → adjust saddle height (3mm steps), setback (5mm steps, recalibrate knee angle after), bar height, cranks if needed → ride 2–3 times between changes. Pair with hip-flexor / glute flexibility and strength work for best results.
